A new prescription drug that is being manufactured in a generic form has been given away as part of the "female Viagra" initiative by the state health department, to the state’s public health agency.
The initiative, called "FDA-approved Viagra," will be available in pharmacies of the city, according to the agency, but it will be sold as "generic Viagra," which will be available to the public by the same pharmacy.
FDA officials told The Associated Press that the drug is approved for sale in pharmacies without a prescription by May 1.
In addition to the FDA-approved drug, pharmacies in the state will have access to discounts on the drug, said Steve Smith, the state's director of public health.
"We are very excited that this initiative will be available in pharmacies, and that's how we're going to use this," Smith said.
The move comes just a week before a federal lawsuit against the health-care system has been launched against the state, including a lawsuit against the state and other pharmaceutical companies that manufacture and sell generic drugs. The state has also sued drugmakers for failing to follow federal law, including the so-called "black box" warning, which states that the drug can be used in a manner that could cause serious health problems.

The FDA approved Viagra in 1998, but in 2000, it was pulled from the market because it caused liver problems, a problem that would not go away with its generic version.
The drug is now available without a prescription in pharmacies, including CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, and others, according to the agency.
The company said it is "continuing to work with the FDA and the public to ensure that the FDA-approved drug is safe and effective for patients and physicians, and that the benefits and risks of Viagra outweigh any risks."
FDA officials said they are working with the public to find a safe generic version of Viagra, which is the prescription version sold by CVS.
But they did not specify whether the drug is sold in any pharmacy or retail stores, the agency said, and they do not recommend it to the public.
"The drug will be sold only by the physician, not the pharmacy,'' said Scott Felser, the state's director of pharmacy operations.
